Open Door Policy

         This cartoon's message is about U.S and other countries opening trade to China. The other message is that there was a rush to China to gain land and materials after they lost a war to Japan. Many Countries thought of this as an opportunity to gain land a materials from China. After the war with China and Japan, Chinese citizens were not happy with other countries going into their country. The U.S wanted to trade with China just like other countries did too. China was weak and beat down after losing the war, so countries started invading. Other opinions that people might have are that the U.S power was very strong at the time. The techniques used in this cartoon are symbolism because it uses characters that symbolize other countries. The other technique used in this cartoon is labeling because it shows China as a man with a robe that said China on it and it represents China. The bag that says U.S commercial expansionist is the symbol of U.S influence on other countries. Other countries tried to expand their sphere of influence just as the U.S did.

American Imperialism

The message of this cartoon is about imperialism of the United States. The other message of this cartoon is that it shows the territory the U.S has gained and it shows the power the U.S has over other countries. The U.S during this time was gaining a lot more territories. McKinley was part of the help in this. The menu items are showing all of the territories such as Porto Rico, Cuba, and the Philippines. Other opinions people might have are that the U.S army is really powerful because they have gained lots of territory over other countries. The technique used in this cartoon is symbolism because it uses Uncle Sam and the president McKinley. It also uses labeling because it labels the items on the menu. McKinley was the president at the time during this political cartoon. McKinley helped out in this effort because he led the Spanish-American War and helped Cuba out.

Spanish-American War


         This cartoon's message is about the U.S president not wanting to join the join the Spanish-American War. President McKinley tried to broker a more peaceful policy between the Spanish government and Cuban insurrectionists. The other message of this cartoon is that the U.S was the hold-out of the War. McKinley was not sure if the U.S should go into the war and this cartoon shows it. The treatment of the Cubans is why the U.S joined the war. Yellow journalism was a big part of the U.S going into war too. Other opinions people might have are that the U.S should have joined the war earlier. The techniques used in this cartoon is symbolism because it uses the bald eagle, which represents the U.S. It also uses exaggeration because the bald eagle and Uncle Sam is bigger than everything else because it shows the military power in the U.S. The dead person on the ground represents the other country. The lady is the Cuban getting saved by the U.S.

Purchase of Alaska

The message of this cartoon is about the Purchase of Alaska by the U.S. The other message of this cartoon is that Seward’s purchase was a bad purchase. The purchase of Alaska was not a good purchase to many Americans thought it was just full of ice and was no use in materials or resources. Some people turned out to be wrong. Seward was buying from Russia. The message of this cartoon is about the Roosevelt Corollary and how Roosevelt acted as a policeman in an area. Annexation of Hawaii


The message of this cartoon is the annexation of Hawaii. The other message of this cartoon is about the queen in Hawaii not allowing Americans to harvest sugar because she thought it was still her land. The Queen's name is Queen Liliuokalani.Other opinions people might have are that American sugar harvesters should have been allowed to harvest their sugar. The technique used in this cartoon is symbolism because Uncle Sam is representing the U.S. It also uses labeling because it labels the sugar barrel. The Americans started getting more power and could then harvest sugar in Hawaii. The queen was only in control for a while until it became part of the United States.
